GIMMIE A WHOPPER!

triple.jpg

I don't eat fast food...I don't even eat red meat but I do remember my favorite burger... definately the Whopper.  I stopped eating red meat when i was 9 and before then...id get a whopper and cut it in half and eat half and my dad would finish the rest.  And THEN; they made the Whopper jr. and it was the best thing ever.  Anyway...needless to say that when I stopped eating red meat I went through whopper withdrawls...so I could empathize with these subjects of this experiment.

I'm suprised nobody got violent!

swagger JACK

So...I don't know if you all have heard the rumor circulating today but word is that Lil Wayne aka Weezy F. Baby (please say the baby) aka birdman JR...was shot 5 times today.  I've been all over the internet and I haven't found any information to validate these rumors...But I figured I'd throw my 2 cents in about this situation.

If any of you have the new Complex magazine you know that Weezy is on the cover in a strait jacket
complex.com - covers

Shouts to Kristen Bell for gettin the other side (I'm a fan of Veronica Mars)...anyway.  For those of you that may think that this is familiar...it is...ITS A FUKKIN RIP OFF OF AN OLD VIBE COVER

Soooo...I'm figuring that this rumor about Lil Wayne getting shot is just a part of him trying to imitate Pac...

how clever

Last night i was flipping through channels and I saw something that I figured I'd share.  Remember Helly Hansen?  No, well it was the chosen hood bubble coat brand in the hood during like the mid to late 90s.  I mean it didn't really go anywhere; the hood just moved on to other brands... anyway let me jog your memory

Often i reminisce with my friends about brands like RP55, Triple Fat Goose, EBTEK, Structure (which is now Express for men), PNB, and all the other brands we used to wear.  So, i was watching TV last night and i saw the coolest L-R-G sweatshirt!

Now, at first I thought it was a house...but then i saw the L-R-G tree and then I read the words...and then it all started coming back to me!

VICK SENTENCED

So about an hour ago the sentencing came down for Michael Vick in the charges of dog fighting and animal cruelty and all that other stuff...Vick was sentenced to 23 months. Not bad I say, much better than 6 years! He has to do 85% of his time which means 19.5 months, sooooo IF he's good he could be released as early as May of 2009!. So, he's gonna lose 2 years of his life...and millions upon millions of dollars. So far hes lost an estimated $141,898,073

$50 million: Endorsement income lost over the next decade, according to an estimate by the University of Oregon's Warsaw Sports Marketing Center.

$19.97 million: Previously paid bonuses that an arbitrator has ruled the Falcons can recoup from Vick (a ruling currently being reviewed by U. S. District Judge David Doty in Minneapolis).

$928,073: Funds Vick put into an escrow account, as part of his plea agreement, to fund the care of about 54 pit bulls found on his property.

I like Michael Vick, always have always will (considering I dont know anything about him except that he's fine, and a damn good football player who may or may not be bisexual and have herpes, who likes to fight dogs)...hmmm I guess I know more about him than I thought. Aaaaanyway...I'm not against dogs but I dont get the purpose. I know poeple fighting dogs RIGHT NOW...shhhhhhhhhhhhh...im sure you can hear them if you really listen. So, I ask what the purpose was. Do the dogs feel any better now that Michael Vick is behind bars? And as for PETA, I wonder about peole who value animal life over human life...but whatever

So the new styles P dropped Tuesday; I'm waiting until I hear good things about it before I go spend my hard earned money; especially since one of the biggest supporters of Styles said he wasn't really feelin it.   That being said; i did see the video for the single "Blows my Mind"...here take a look

My FIRST reaction...whatever he's on that "Blows his mind" and has him daydreaming of grown men doing pull-ups on traffic light poles...is not good and he needs to get off of it ASAP.  My SECOND reaction was dejavu...like; that video reminded me of another video that i had seen RECENTLY...then it hit me.

Kinda reminds me of Bring it On when Sparky Polastri (the spirit fingers dude) was givin the same video concept to all the different schools...Hmmm...maybe the two are just great minds that think alike...after all, they did cipher together; maybe that energy rubbed off

So...I guess I can expect the same concept from Papoose's video *ahem* IF papoose ever makes a video.  Hmmm...I'm not gonna hold my breath waitin for that.  I mean I knoooooo video biting is prevelant but not Styles...not the GHOST...oh well

R.I.P. PIMP C

A friend and I were just talking last night about UGK and I threw in their latest double album becase I didn't really take the time to let it sink in...and then I woke up and heard tragic news.  Pimp C was found dead this morning in an LA hotel room.  DAMN MAN!  I thought it was a sick hoax.  I was all prepared to celebrate HOV day and I get this news!  That's a blow (no pun intended).  Now that being said, and me being in texas; the wire is buzzing about the cause of his death but I'm going to respect the word of UGK's manager who said in a statement, "I ask that everyone please respect his family and those close to him at this time and refrain from rumors and innuendo"

Now, we all know that my hip hop repetoire may not be as large as Charity's [check the FIRST "For What It's Worth" to hear the story] but it's pretty damn good considering what some other people's are so I gotta admit that I'm not really HIP to all things GHOSTFACE/Pretty Toney, but I know that he's TYTE, cool as hell/interesting, dangerous [literally], has a HUGE following, and that he can't speak "good english" wortha lick so I figured the best way to introduce his latest album [DROPPING THIS COMING TUESDAY] was to show his lighter more funny side in order to encourage those who may be scared shitless of him [like myself when I met him] to explore and get an idea of what he's about so without further ado..."THE WORLD ACCORDING TO PRETTY TONEY":

Wanna be startin somethin? Well...you done did it!

Im an 80s baby...ah yes, the wonderful decade that brought us such things as Reaganomics, Hip Hop, Crack Cocaine...and yes, the solo career of one Michael Jackson. 25 years ago tomorrow Michael Jackson released Thriller

1.  Wanna Be Startin Somethin?
2.  Baby Be Mine
3.  The Girl is Mine ft. Paul McCartney
4.  Thriller ft. Vincent Price
5.  Beat It ft. Eddie Van Halen
6.  Billie Jean
7.  Human Nature
8.  P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing)
9.  The Lady in my Life

Who can forget the video/mini movie thriller

and the interpolations on the classic original...here are some of my favorites;

Bollywood Thriller

Lego Thriller

25 years later, the album itself still bangs AND consider how many times the tracks have been sampled; I can't count but the most recent that comes to mind is Kanye's sample of P.Y.T for the song Good Life. Emcees always reference Mike and Thriller; again, there are too many to name but most recently Jay-Z's reference in American Gangster "Now they wanna ya boy like Mike in his prime/Billie Jean the goddamn boy ain't mine"...Anyway

I guess in "celebration" of the 25th anniversary of the release of Thriller; Akon has decided to try to cover "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin" (I heard he was asked to do this by Michael Jackson himself so...i will keep my comments to myself) Just click, listen and laugh/cry/dance/sing along/shake your head in shame/ and then play it again (cause its catchy!)...

Free at Last!

In 2002 Freeway dropped his classic debut album Philadelphia Freeway.  If you don't have it, you're missing something great in your life.  I remember when I first heard Freeway on the Dynasty album on the 1-900-Hustla cut; and he held his own with Jay-Z and Beanie AND just outshined Memphis Bleek into obscurity.  I been a fan since then, and the first album didn't dissapoint.  What we do, Flipside, and Alright were the singles but the whole album was just CRAZY.  Go cop that!  Freeway's unorthodoxed rhyme scheme, his voice, and the way he tackles the beats (which are always bangers)...just makes for ear candy.  So I know you're thinking, if I speak so highly of Freeway, where has he been for 5 years...well.  When the ROC dynasty fell, it left a lotta people out in the cold trying to pick sides, a lot of the members of State Property fell through the cracks.  So...after a lot of red type...finally here brought to you Shawn Carter and Curtis Jackson.

Now we've all heard about sophomore slumps...but yea...It doesn't apply here.  Free is back and better than ever.  Now I shall break it down.

This Cant Be Real ft. Marsha Ambrosious:  For those that don't know Freeway's story, this track lays it out for you.  More than rhyming, he's pretty much just bringing everybody up to speed on what's been going on but it blends so beautifully with the smooth track (they unleashed the flutes on this one) and the soulful stylings of Marsha chiming in with the adlibs and the one line chrous..."this can't be reaaal" followed by Freeway's assurance "Swear to G-d its all real!"  *****

Its Over:  Horns + drums + strings + voice sample = banger.  This is pretty much the "IM BACK BITCHES" track.  He starts out each verse by flipping Jay lines ("Things just ain't the same for gangsters"and First Jay and Dame break up")  and then gets into his own shit to the point where you almost think the lines were alwyas his.  This is just straight spittin classic rap bragidocio (but like the scripture say they quickly forget/ so quickly let me reminisce/if a nigga ever try me we'll see who can spit/any rapper anybody ill body the list) but at the same time, dropping subtle shots at two of the hottest ROC producers; Just Blaze and Kanye for not being parts of the album, but from the sounds of it he doesn't need em, and he isn't phased.  Oh yea he made a video for this one too. *****

Still Got Love:  Anthem!  The title says it all.  Its all about getting love and showing it back.  The beat makes you roll down the windows and turn it up (even in the winter) and Free proves that he still got it with lines like "and i still got love, like a father for his son, when his son six feet deep/ [damn!] and he just got the call, outta nowhere with no time to grieve."  So many punchlines in this track you gotta put it on repeat, cause...ITS THE ROC!  Oh yea they made a video for this one too...this is definately a hot single that SHOULD get plenty of radio spins but...who knows. *****

Roc-A-Fella Billionaires ft. Jay-Z:  I was a bit unsure about the "hey big spender" sample at first, but it fits the track (which sounds to me a lot like Dirt off you Shoulders).  Pretty much just Freeway and Jay-Z braggin on their chip amount.  Can't hate that, but for me, it gets a bit old...Cars, jewels, houeses, champagne, blah blah blah...But hey, the kiddies like it.  ***1/2

When They Remember:  When you intro a track with Gladys Knight, you gotta it justice, and he does.  This is just Freeway spittin, tryin to leave his mark on the game.   This is a track you just get lost in; you can zone out to the beat or Free's lyrics, you definately have to listen more than once to catch all of what he's spittin, BUT I LIKE IT THAT WAY!  *****

Take it to the Top ft. 50 Cent:  For all the flack he gave Ja Rule, 50 cent sure knows how to write a great hook for a HipHop love track, and he's done it again!  Every girl who has a guy who's makin moves has some insecurities, so Freeway uses this track to try to put the doubts to rest. "Cause I'm/24 hours a day stuck in the war, at least 8 hours or more cookin them rhymes/ hustle 16 hours just so you can hit the stores, and you complain you want more FREEtime!?"  He's pretty much sayin, I work to provide, you can't have it both ways and trying to convince the chick that he's working to give her what she deserves.  Now, I'll leave my personal opinions out of this cause I know a lotta people gon dig it.  Plus, how can you hate 50 singin sweet melodies!? ***1/2

Spit That Shit:  With a track reminiscent of "The Truth" Freeway examines the love hate relationship he has with the world claiming, "muh-fukkas hate when they seem me pullin up in the benny/but they love it when i spit that shit!"  I agree, I love it! ***

Rep the Streets:  Freeway just solidifies his position as a Philly Nigga.  The track is all about Philly and how Freeway came up in the city of brotherly love, the track makes you feel like you're taking a trip down memory lane. ***

Free At Last:  Shout out to Double-0 on the beat for the title track (Kidz in the Hall stand up!).  On this short and sweet track, Freeway's just ridin it and pretty much askin the infamous question "can I live?!"***1/2

Baby Don't Do It ft. Scarface: The track starts off slow with Freeway sounding suprisingly laid back over the vocal sample and a nice string arrangement;  then the horns and drums kick in and it picks up, with the sample chiming in with "baby don't do it" right on time when it's fitting.  Then,  Scarface bodies the track.  Not sayin that he murdered Freeway on his own shit, but, its FACE, spittin real shit that only a vet in the game can talk about, "I gotta live with my mistakes so im a take them/put em into words so everyone aint gotta make them/take them words, i put off in this song/nigga live yo life by it or take your chance, youre on your own." *****

Nuttin' On Me:  More straight spittin over hot beats.  In the words of Phonte, "Dope beats, dope rhymes what more do yall want?" ***

Walk Wit Me ft. Busta Rhymes and Jadakiss:  I guess death threats over wax never get old...in this case its not what you say but HOW you say it.  Same ole, "don't fukk with my crew" sentiment, but Freeway expresses it better than most.  Add Busta Rhymes and Jadakiss, and...its a decent track; the hood gon LOVE it though.  ***

Lights Get Low ft. Rick Ross:  This is the lowlight of the track for me, seems like a forced "club banger," maybe because its of Rick Ross and the space age track.  So, the biggest beards in the game got together and made an ok track, I'll prolly skip it most times I listen to this album.  *

I Cry:  Grown man shit, cause grown men cry.  A short and sweet ending to the album with Freeway just sharing some experiences in his life that made him cry.  ***1/2
Overall score = 3.7
Man I'm just happy that Freeway finally came out with another album, and its dope.  On the level of his classic Debut.  It's temporarily displaced American Gangster in my ipod touch rotation.  Now if you don't LIKE Freeway, you won't like this hahahaha.  But if you like good HipHop, you'll bang it, and if you LOVE HipHop, you'll BUY it.

When it came down to the NAOMI C. vs BEYONCE' K. battle on WHO wore this style dress the best? She was the winner, hands down...then there was Jennifer Lopez who tried to rock the belt on it's own on the cover of SOME magazine and yeah...

I have music, movies, turntables, books, and a group of friends that get me by But...in the past year there have been certain times where i wish i could just BE somewhere else...I wont catalog all of them but I'll give you the most recent incident.

So...ive decided to stop ripping music from the internet and actually waiting until release dates and buying the actual albums from the stores. Something about this culture of instant gratifyication and remembering that patience is a virtue blah blah blah...so all my friends are raving about how Little Brother's album GetBack is soooooooooo illy right!?

So the day comes...October 23rd and I take my ass to bestbuy...ITS NOT THERE

Yo im walkin around the music section like its some kinda joke. I look in EVERY isle; even showtunes and country music. Shit...i even check the DVD releases...nothing. And when i ask a sales associate...he has NO IDEA who or what "a little brother" is. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn sun. So then i call target and all the other stores in the area...NOTHING. I mean wowzers...First they bring Soulja Boy down here to perform...now they DONT carry Little Brother...this is officially Hip Hop Hell.

So here it goes..."I think about the youth and how they're minds are so closed/ cause today rap city look like video soul" ~Phonte

I bet most of you dont even know what video soul is...that saddens me

This over-gangster/dopeboy/pimp/ shit is really really really getting tiring. After seeing students come out of the biological sciences building singing "Im soooo hood" I wonder if these rappers realize that nobody is really taking them seriously. Somebody tell me what's hood about DJ Khaled, homie looks like a penguin. I mean, soulja boy can "crank dat" because he's 17. You grown ass men playing dress up makes your videos look like a costume party; 30 cars, 40 chains, shiny shades, blah blah blah. YO...i just came to the realization that niggas is still SAGGIN out here...REALLY? That shit aint fly sun. Oh and for the record...I dont care how much Ed Hardy costs...I know the work of a bdazzler when i see it; you gettin gypped! Take it off.

Back to the videos...now to the format...ooooooo lawd the format: hood scene; club scene; "perfomance" (read: ass shakin) scene; mix; repeat...and then put another song on the end. NOTE: if its a "love song;" make sure you show the rapper and his chosen hood rat going shopping and riding in a drop top (bitches love shopping and drop tops). That shit is so...the opposite of contrived; i'm going to start directing videos!
